Gish Apartments

Gish Apartments

Gish Apartments is a 35-unit transit-oriented family apartment complex that provides quality affordable housing for households earning 35%–50% of the area median income. Over a third of the apartments are for residents with developmental disabilities. The complex is a model for the State of California's Multifamily Housing Program for mainstreaming special needs populations. Residents can access a computer center and are provided with services tailored to support low-income families, such as financial literacy training, computer training, and after-school programs

Since its inception in 1993, Rural Studio has focused on instilling in its students the value of socially-conscious design by integrating projects into the context of an underserved population. The Studio exists to educate architecture students, emphasizing the importance of creating appropriate design solutions within the context of the local community. The $20K House program specifically addresses the lack of decent, affordable housing options in Alabama's Black Belt region.
