Social and ethical responsibility

Since 1949 the city lost its rivers and those spaces have been replaced with highways. Four out of five mexico city citizens have to share one fifth of the street space. The Rio La Piedad piped under the highway Viaducto Miguel Alemán is the perfect example of social segregation because it can only be used by driving citizens. The Regenerated Rio La Piedad presents an opportunity to create public spaces that emphasize public mobility and improve the quality of life of the local community

Ressource efficiency and environmental impact

The project intends to revive the pre existent living systems of the Anáhuac basin returning the native biological diversity. After the deconstruction of Viaducto, most of the materials will be reused for the regeneration of Rio La Piedad. New water efficient buildings will collect rain water to use it, treat it, reuse it and finally return it to the river as clean as possible. Then the city will participate in the water cycle consciously.

Economic lifecycle perfomance

The actual average building next to the Viaducto Miguel Alemán is about two stories high. In order to ensure economic maintenance the neighborhoods need to be densified. All the potential investors will buy the number of additional stories. This money will become a financial source for the neighborhoods. This also will ensure the maintenance of the area. The implementation of a financial trust fund will collect and manage the money from investors and it will be used for the project only.

Contextual performance and impact

The design of the living systems is the starting point to make our city more habitable. Rio La Piedad must be designed to create a better condition of life for its inhabitants. A river can change the vision we have about our city. One of the biggest transformations will occur with community: now you will be pleased to open your window in order to enjoy the river view, instead of managing a pollutant and noisy flow in front of your window. Water is the thread that ties all the living systems.
